Warning signs
- A partner discourages contact with family or friends.
- Pressure to change religion, before or after marriage, without honest discussion.
- Concealment of identity, religion, or marital status.
- Promises made only verbally — never in writing or before family.
- Isolation, financial control, or threats when questions are raised.
If you recognize these signs — in your own life or someone else's — it is worth asking questions early. Silence protects the deception, not the person.
As of 2025, 12 Indian states have laws prohibiting religious conversion carried out by force, fraud, allurement, or marriage without free consent.
- Uttar Pradesh's 2024 amendment raised the maximum penalty to life imprisonment for marrying a woman by deception in order to convert her religion.
- Rajasthan's 2025 law allows the victim, parents, siblings, or relatives by blood, marriage, or adoption to file a complaint.
- Penalties elsewhere typically range from 1 to 10 years imprisonment, longer when the person affected is a woman, a minor, or from a Scheduled Caste or Tribe.

- Respect due process. An accusation is not a conviction; let legal channels do their work.
- No hate, no targeting. This platform opposes coercion, not any community or religion.
